Jackson is in Jackson County ( is the county seat), and in the Central Region. It lies south of Lansing between Battle Creek and Ann Arbor along Interstate 94, on the banks of the Portage River.
In 1829, Horace Blackman and his brother Russell cleared land and built a cabin. The town was first called Jacksonburgh, after Andrew Jackson, but it was changed to Jacksonopolis, then Jackson in 1833. The city is the birthplace of the Republican Party, which held its first convention here in 1854.
