Mackinaw City is in Cheboygan County, and in the Northern Region. This community is located northwest of Cheboygan between St Ignace and Indian River along Interstate 75 near the shores of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. Situated on the Straits of Mackinac Island in northern Michigan.
Samuel Champlain commissioned Jean Nicolet to explore the area in 1634 and make peace with the Indians. Shortly after, this location became a fur-trading post and later the site of the Fort, active from 1712-1781. The surrounding area was first officially platted in 1857. In 1870, George W. Stimson constructed a store which led to the formation of the town. It was incorporated as a village in 1882.
Today, Mackinaw is known as the Gateway to the U.P., it is one of the top places to see in Michigan. Its many attractions include Colonial Michilimackinac, the Old Mackinac Lighthouse, and Mill Creek. It also serves 3 passenger boat lines to Mackinac Island. This historic City has many unique stores and restaurants along the main street to enjoy.
