Northern Region

The Northern Region of Nevada, also known as "Cowboy Country," has been defined, at least in part, by the culture and heritage of the cattle ranchers who settled here in the late 1800's, and by the Humboldt River, which flows 300 miles through the state along I-80. The Cowboy Poetry Gathering is held here in Elko every year during the 4th of July, and Winnemucca's annual Labor Day rodeo is the oldest in the state.

History buffs will enjoy such attractions as Battle Mountain's Trail of the 49ers Interpretive Center, which has exhibits that explain the transportation and migration of the Gold Rush pioneers, and Unionville's mining camp ruins. Of course, modern-day entertainment can be found in casinos in such towns as Wendover (at the Nevada-Utah border on the edge of the Bonneville Salt Flats), Jackpot (Nevada-Idaho border), Elko and Winnemucca.

Natural features of the region offer opportunities for such recreation as heli-skiing, fishing, backpacking, hiking, mountain biking, and hunting at such places as the Ruby Marshes, a wildlife sanctuary; Angel Lake, high amid the East Humboldt Mountains; the Ruby Mountains; and the more-than-100,000-acre Jarbidge Wilderness Area.
