South Central Region

Nevada's South Central Region is defined by expansive scenery, geologic wonders, and historic mining towns. Wild deer, antelope, horses and burros roam vast valleys that mountain bikers come to explore. Walker Lake, just north of Hawthorne, is the remnant of a huge prehistoric sea, and is now a popular spot for fishing and water-skiing. Century-old ranches in the valleys are filled with livestock and fields of hay.

Several regional towns along the route between Reno and Las Vegas offer points of interest within or near them. Traveling south from Reno: Hawthorne, a stop-over for travelers between Reno and Las Vegas, is within an hour of the ghost town sites of Marietta and Candelaria. Tonopah, an important mining town founded in 1900, boasts the Tonopah Mining Park and the Central Nevada Museum. Goldfield, south of Tonopah, was once Nevada’s largest city with a population of nearly 20,000. The town of Beatty, is the gateway to Death Valley National Park, home to several attractions including Scotty’s Castle, Furnace Creek Resort, Ubehebe Crater, and Zabriskie Point.
