Franconia

Franconia is located in Grafton County. First granted as Indian Head in 1764, the settlers were not able to meet the terms of its charter. The land was regranted in 1772 and given the name Morristown but was renamed Franconia in 1782 after the German Franconian Alps, which the area resembled. Franconia also includes the villages and places of Mittersill and Franconia Notch.

Franconia is well known for its natural features, including: the Old Man of the Mountain, the Flume Gorge; Profile and Echo Lakes; the Basin Gorge; and the mountains of Lafayette, Lincoln and Garfield, which are mountains within the White Mountains and along the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. The nearby Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway was the first passenger tramway built in North America. Visitors may also wish to visit two bridges, Flume Bridge and Sentinel Pine Bridge, in nearby Lincoln or visit the The Frost Place, where Robert Frost wrote many of his poems about New England.
