Gorham is located in Coos County seven miles south of Berlin between Shelburne and Randolph along Highway 2. It lies on the banks of the Androscoggin River and Ellis River near Wildcat Mountain and Middle Carter Mountain. A gateway to the Great North Woods, Gorham is home to several miles of scenic and challenging trails, including a section of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail and the nation's first attraction, The Mt. Washington Auto Road.

First chartered as part of Shellburne in 1770, the town was renamed Gorham and incorporated in 1836 under the suggestion of Sylvester Davis, a Gorham, Maine resident and a descendent of the Gorham family that founded the Maine town in 1764.

For an interesting twist on hiking, the Whitefield Gorham Rail Trail, which terminates in Gorham is an abandoned rail line that has been converted into walking trails. Hikers will also find trails in nearby Mount Washington State Park or Moose Brook State Park. For winter activities, try nearby Wildcat Mountain, Tuckerman Ravine or Pinkham Notch for downhill and cross country skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and more.
