Lake Placid
Lake Placid is located in Essex County nine miles east of Saranac Lake and in the Northern Region of the state. It lies between Keene and Raybrook along Highway 86/73, near the Whiteface Mountain Ski Area. The village of Lake Placid lies on the shore of Mirror Lake and Lake Placid; the former provides a backdrop for the Main Street commercial district. Host of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics, the area boasts downhill skiing at Whiteface Mountain, 8 miles north, as well as other competitive and recreational sports activities at both state-operated and private facilities. Summer recreational facilities include bridle and bicycle paths, private and public tennis courts, six golf courses, hiking trails and the indoor Olympic Arena for summer ice skating. Boats can be rented at both lakes.
