Central Region

International travelers delve into history, behold geological features and enjoy music in the Central-Leatherstocking area. The The Farmers Museum and National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown are two historical attractions. The Glimmerglass Opera, also at Cooperstown, is a tranquil venue for operatic performances featuring the familiar, unusual and avant garde. The Howe Caverns at Howes Cave beckon visitors to view 10-million-year-old rock formations and enjoy a boat ride on an underground lake. The area's canal era is encapsulated at the Canastota Canal Town Museum at Canastota , a mid-1800s structure containing exhibits and memorabilia. Those interested in Byzantine architecture will want to visit Jordanville, home of Holy Trinity Orthodox Seminary. Golden cupolas (onion domes) and a bell tower grace the campus.

Visitors to the Dutch Stockade village in Schenectady and Saratoga Springs' famed race course are also charmed by one of the Capital-Saratoga area's favorite daughters, Grandma Moses. She is famed for replicating the area's patchwork-quilt landscape in her folk-art paintings. Tours are offered at the New York State Capitol and the Executive Mansion in Albany. The Shaker Heritage Society, also in Albany, features an 1848 meeting house. Included is a museum and gift shop. Authentic road structures in the Cambridge area are the Buskirk and Eagleville covered bridges, dating to the 1850s. Historic parts of the Erie Canal and Old Double Lock 19 can be seen at the Vischer Ferry Nature Preserve at Clifton Park. Bird watching, hiking and canoeing are included.
