Canton is located in northeastern Ohio in Stark County and is the county seat. It lies about 50 miles south-southeast of Cleveland and 15 miles south of Akron along I-77 on the banks of the Tuscarawas River.
Canton was founded in 1805 and became the Stark County seat in 1809 incorporating as a village in 1822. A busy metal plow factory drew many settlers to the town in the 1830s and as the town grew received its city charter in 1854.
The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 79,259, a decrease of 4,902 since 1990. Major industries in Canton today include the Timken Company, Diebold and SCI.
Canton is the home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Canton Amateur Sports Hall of Fame and the McKinley National Memorial, a monument to former president William McKinley.
Known as Ohio's "Golf Capital", Canton has 39 golf courses. It also boasts more than 700 acres of parks.
