Port Clinton is located in northwestern Ohio in Ottawa County (of which it is the county seat) about 35 miles east-southeast of Toledo on the shores of Lake Erie. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 7,123, an increase of 17 since 1990.
The city is named in honor of DeWitt Clinton, the famous statesman from New York who was known as "the Father of the Erie Canal" and who proposed the building of a canal from the mouth of the Portage River in Sandusky County to the Ohio River at Cincinnati. As it turned out, a survey disclosed that what would have been called the Sandusky-Scioto Canal, was not a feasible proposition because of an insufficient water supply.
Nearby recreational outlets include Catawba Island State Park, 10 miles northeast of town; East Harbor State Park, 10 miles to the east-northeast and Marblehead Lighthouse State Park, 10 miles to the east.
Catawba Willow Golf & Country Club (18), Port Clinton Golf Course (9) and Catawba Island Club (9) are open to the public.
