Toledo is located in northwestern Ohio in Lucas County and is the county seat. It is situated at the western end of Lake Erie on the banks of the Maumee River and the shores of Maumee Bay.
Toledo was formed in 1833 by the consolidation of the villages of Port Lawrence and Vistula. During the 1840s, the development of the Miami and Erie Canal in Indiana stimulated Toledo's growth. With its accommodating lake port, the city became an important gateway to the West. In 1888, Edward Libbey founded the Libbey glass company here.
The city is one of the most significant ports of the Great Lakes. Connected with the St. Lawrence Seaway, its port is one of the world's largest for bituminous coal shipment.
The city is the home of the University of Toledo.
Golfers can choose from among Detwiler Golf Club, Ottawa Park Golf Course, built in 1908, South Toledo Golf Club and Tamaron Country Club, all open to the public and featuring 18-hole courses. Collins Park Golf Course is a public 9-hole layout.
