Youngstown is located in northeastern Ohio in Mahoning County and it is the county seat. It lies about 40 miles east of Akron on the banks of the Mahoning River.
Youngstown was settled in 1797 and named in honor of John Young of New York, who bought the site of the future city from the Connecticut Land Company. The town was incorporated in 1848. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 84,650, a decrease of 11,082 since 1990.
Once dependent on basic steel for its economy, the Youngstown area is diversifying to include automobile assembly, manufacturing, metal fabrication and small business enterprises. The city is the home of 49 parks and one of the nation's outstanding American art museums, the Butler Institute. It is also host to Youngstown State University.
Youngstown Country Club offers an 18-hole course which members of other clubs can play while Henry Stambaugh Golf Course offers a 9-hole layout to the general public.
