Murfreesboro is located in Rutherford County and it is the county seat. It lies southeast of Nashville along U.S. Highway 41, near Stones River National Battlefield. Interstate Highway 24 runs along the city's west edge and proceeds south to Chattanooga. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 58,430, an increase of 13,508 since 1990.
Stones River is the nearby site of a major Civil War battle fought by the forces of Union General Rosecrans and Confederate General Bragg, that began Dec. 31, 1862 and ended Jan. 2, 1863. There were approximately 9,000 casualties on each side. Southern forces failed to capitalize on an initial victory, allowing the Northern forces to win.
In addition to the battlefield, another attraction is Cannonsburgh Village. Cannonsburgh, Murfreesboro's original name, is a restored Southern hamlet comprising a small schoolhouse and church, gristmill, functioning blacksmith's forge and physician's office. Murfreesboro is part of the Nashville, Tennessee metro area.
