Lubbock is located south of Amarillo on I-27 in the Texas Panhandle.

Lubbock County, was founded in 1876. The origins of present-day Lubbock, the county seat, were not formed until 1890.

Lubbock's worst disaster occurred in 1970, when a record tornado flattened three square miles in the center of town. Twenty-six persons perished and damages totaled more than $135 million. The city quickly rebuilt the area and added Lubbock Memorial Civic Center to honor those who died.

As of 2001, the estimated population of Lubbock was 201,212.

The city derives its economy from the area's agricultural industry as well as numerous manufacturing firms. Attractions include the International Textile Center of Texas Tech, Lubbock Windmill Museum, and God's Country, an outdoor drama. There also are three area wineries.

Lubbock is part of the Lubbock, Texas metro area.
