Arlington, on the southwest bank of the Potomac, is a suburb of Washington D.C. Arlington County smallest county in the United States and in the Eastern Region of the state. It covers 25.7 square miles, of which about 4.6 square miles are federal property. With a population of 185,000 Arlington has no incorporated community. Some of the major centers of development are Ballston, Clarendon, Columbia Pike, Crystal City, Rosslyn and Shirlington.
Arlington was named for the home of Robert E. Lee. Ceded to the federal government in 1789 as part of the District of Columbia; the land was returned to Virginia in 1846.
