Blacksburg is located in Montgomery County in the Western Region of the state. In 1798, the present town was established on land donated by William Black. Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University is on Hwy 460, 9 miles from I81. Virginia Tech is the largest university in the state, with some 25,000 students and 90 buildings. The 2,600-acre campus offers tours; museums, art galleries and dining halls are open to the public. Huckleberry Trail, a recreational pathway popular with bicyclists, walkers, runners, and in-line skaters; the trail eventually connects Blacksburg with Christianburg, a 6-mile distance. Blacksburg is located just west of Roanoke, on I81; the Jefferson National Forest, Claytor Lake, and Claytor Lake State Park are nearby.
