Winchester is located in Frederick County 70-80 miles north/northwest of Washington D.C. along Interstate 81 in the Central Region of the state. Mount Hebron Cemetery in the historic district includes the Stonewall Confederate Cemetery and two original church cemeteries. Important Civil War battles were fought here from 1862 to 1864. Gen. David Hunter ordered the burning of the city in 1864, but Maj. Joseph Stearns prevented it.
